Fun Team Building Activities for Diverse Workplaces

Every workplace needs a team that has good communication, synergy, and interpersonal understanding. Such a team can be built and sustained using team-building activities. Your team needs to be able to talk to each other, both professionally and personally, so that there are no barriers. Understanding each other means no office politics, jealousy, or conflicts. Last but not least, good synergy means that the team will have an efficient and productive workflow, that enables them to function like a well-oiled machine.

However, building a competent team isn’t something you can do overnight. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you can’t build a good team in one either. Building a team is more than just finding people with good professional and people skills. It takes effective human capital management and discovery.

Creating a diverse yet cohesive team entails that you make sure each employee mixes well with the other. This means that their personalities, characters, and preferences should not be an issue of contention and that they should adopt each other’s styles seamlessly.

Once you have a team in place, you need to make sure they connect. That’s where the fun team-building activities come in.

Here are a few team-building activities you can use to make your team more efficient.

The Common Ground Icebreaker

Icebreakers tend to be very useful, especially if you are building a new team, or have some new hires. The common ground icebreaker is used to help team members figure out their similarities, likes, and dislikes. The idea is to give them something common to talk about, something they can all agree on and can converse freely about. It shouldn’t have anything related to physical appearance, gender, race, etc.

If you want to go ahead with it, you should separate your team into small groups of preferably 4 members per group. You introduce them to each other and provide some pointers to talk about that will then help them figure the rest out themselves. Or, you can take another route where you have one moderator who names out different things and the team members raise their hand if they are interested in it. If there are two or more members who raise their hands, spark a conversation between them.

The Marshmallow Spaghetti Tower

This team-building activity may be a little time-consuming so you should probably plan it out beforehand. You will also need some props for it, so you should collect them too. The idea behind this activity is to increase communication, as well as, enhance the ability of your team to work together and come with solutions, while they work towards a common goal and vision.

To plan out this team-building activity, plan a date and time and send your team members the memo. Depending on the number of teams, you need to get one yard of tape, one yard of string, one marshmallow, and 20 sticks of uncooked spaghetti per team. You then need to split your team into groups of three to five people.

Once you have everything set up, you need to give them 18 minutes to build the tallest structure they can with the materials you have provided them. After they’re done, you ask each team about their strategy, planning, and execution of the process, as well as what worked for them and what didn’t.

Physical Activities

Your employees’ health is extremely important because it dictates how well they perform. This is why you should develop a culture of exercise and outdoor activities. You can plan out and organize several outdoor activities that take your team away from the office and make them take part in different activities.

These activities may include things like going to the park for a walk, going to a Zumba session, or even things like trekking or kayaking if your area lets you.

Leadership Spotlight

Your employees will become leaders someday and it’s better if they become leaders in your organization. To make them effective leaders, however, you need to train them and develop those leadership qualities, while eliminating any fears they may have.

You can do this by utilizing improvised activities and games, in which each team member will have to either face their fears, such as public speaking and interpersonal conversation within diverse groups or build upon existing qualities.

Building leadership skills in all team members help you and them not only in the future but also the present. This is because having leadership skills means your team members have more effective communication skills, can handle stress and can take point if they need to.

All in all, these are only some of the many team-building activities you can use to increase synergy among your employees. At times, it’s best to let the team members decide for themselves what kind of team-building activities they want to take part in.
